First Day of School

Today is the first day of school for Fresno Adult School.  It will be the first time since 1984 that I will not be greeting a new group of ESL students. I didn't start my career as an adult ESL instructor on the first day of class.

I started on September 21, 1983.  Classes had started earlier. I never thought of myself as an adult education teacher. I had a standard California Elementary Teaching Credential.  However, on the front of my credential it said I could any class organized for adults.

On that day in September,  I transitioned from a bilingual kindergarten teacher to an adult ESL teacher.  Little did I know that on that day I had entered the Magic Kingdom.

I have a shout out for my former colleagues. I will thinking about you as you start the new school year.
On Thursday, I will be in my ESL professional development class discussing the reading about the role of home language in an ESL classroom.

I may not be in a classroom, but I am still in the game.
